sing "yesterday" for me review

hi hii hope you're all doing well and had a purrfect break! this one's a bit more casual but i wanted to get some more posts up and this is freshest on my mind rn !! i've also rewatched blue exorcist recently, but i'll wait until i finish the new season to think of writing anything there :3 anyways, here it is!<3

as far as romance anime goes, this was definitely one of the more lax ones i've seen. it's more mature, in a way, missing a lot of the highschool romcom troupes, yet that doesn't exactly make it good.. hear me out as we go thru the characters and such as usual

main dude rikuo is really nothing special. after college he spends his days working at a convenience store and lacking the motivation and balls to do anything worthwhile with his life. he's too much of a pussy to the girl he's liked since college and too much of a pushover to say no to a highschool girl. he likes photography, i guess.

boring loser man, idk how he gets 2 cool women to fall for him. despite how i sound i didnt hate him. i was just so neutral about the guy it turned into apathy.

shinako, went to college w rikuo and now teaches highschool. she's kinda whatever too. she has some fucky trauma that makes her struggle with love and relationships, which of course is valid and im proud of her for working through it. just over nothing eyecatching about her, i guess. she can cook.

i guess the point here is not for the viewer to fall in love with these characters, but to simply watch as they are in love with each other! maybe i've been thinking about it all wrong!

whatver my opinion stands the next two characters are a lot cooler lol

haru!

now she definitely has the manic pixie dream girl kinda vibe and so i cant help but love her. im a sucker for the quirky! haru is a highschool dropout who's best friend is an injured crow. she's got a very determined crush on rikuo (for whatever reason....) and declares war on shinako for him. she always gives it her all in this war of love- waiting for him after work, going to his house, lowkey just stalking the dude but its ok cuz shes cute

and finally, rou! a childhood friend of shinako's, and student of the highschool she teaches at. he's an artist boy with a bad case of (reasonable) angst. all he wants is for shinako to look at him for himself, but shinako is very stuck in the past which causes their relationship- whether it be romantic or familial- to be tense and unstable.

so what happens in this show? honestly, not a lot. "i like him but he likes someone else", people not understanding their own feelings causing problems for everyone, 2 different taking care of someone overnight scenes.. idk. i'd say a good descriptor for this show would just be "quiet". there was no flashy opening, or even opening at all pretty much. the art style was unassuming, yet nice in that way. classic. the drama was such that would be meaningful in a day to day life, but not to the scale of whats expected from an actual drama anime.

in its own way, quiet is nice. i'm sure this is exactly the kind of thing a lot of people had been looking for in a show- something relatable. i honestly didn't mind it for that either. its a bit of fresh air amid the intensity of life. still, i just don't feel like it stands out to me all that much.

in conclusion...

★★★☆☆ 3 lucky stars.

it got raised a full star because the ending satisfied me. hard to pull off with romance, and this show would have felt like a total waste if it didn't conclude properly. a quiet show, for those who need a breather.
