sugar apple fairy tale review

oha-luckies!! omg, this blog has reeeally blown up recently!:00 welcome everynyan ^_^ today we're gonna look at a super-duper shoujo meowsterpiece: sugar apple fairy tale!

given the title, i wasn't expecting a whole lot. i stumbled upon it on crunchy and decided to give it a go in my holiday boredom. and i am soo happy that it did! it filled the dark void inside me for a good 24 episodes, and scratched the shoujo itch i didn't even know i had. it had romance! it had fantasy! it had sparkles and sugar and magical fairies with sexy swords- what more could you POSSIBLY want? (i'll list a few things later:p) some background. european kingdom-type fantasy land where fairies exist but are seen as lesser than humans. often, they are captured and used as slaves by the humans that hold their wings- their lifeforces. there is also a widely renowned type of confectioner, the sugar artisans. sugar artisans often chase the title of "silver sugar master", which can be achieved by one person every year by being chosen by the king at a competition.

silver sugar confections are a type of candy art made from silver sugar, a special type of sugar made through the processing of sugar apples (title moment!!). what's special about silver sugar and the confections is that they are the only things that fairies can taste.

our mc main girl anne halford, dreams of becoming a silver sugar master just like her late mother. she also dreams of a world where humans and fairies can stand side by side as equals, like they did in the past.

and here she is! don't worry, she's the age of majority (..as she states verbatim in the first and second episodes). this proclamation really had me doubting this show at first ^^;

but she's great. adorable, kind, determined, and can make one hell of a sugar confection- seriously, they're gorgeous. i love how shiny and sparkling this show is. it works really well for this genre.

for her long and dangerous journey to the competion to become a silver sugar master, anne buys this HANDSOME knight fairy, challe fen challe who hadn't been able to sell bc of his sour personality. this doesn't sway her, as he proves more than able to protect her. she also promises to release him once they made it to her destination.

challe is fantastic. the cold type due to his hatred of the humans who enslaved him (fair) but with a soft spot to the kindhearted girl who freed and cared for him. he's all about protecting her and helping her achieve her dreams. also he has a badass sword that he fucks shit up with and itsreallyhot they even show blood..

mithril lid pod! as u can see the fairies have unique names. this one's a cutie pie who sticks around with the main duo on their adventures because he has a debt to repay towards anne, who saved him.

now dont ask me why the fairies are different sizes- i don't remember. plot. also an interesting thing about the fairies is the way they are born. they can be born from any physical object by a human gazing upon it. pretty cute. mithril was born from a drop of water and challe from obsidian.

i'd now like to give a shoutout to cat for being cat. hi cat. meow! what a guy. ok back to it lolol

i compared this show to sailor moon at one point. HIGH praise. i cant tell you what exact plot points had me feeling like this as they were near the end of the second season and are superduperspoilers, but i need i NEED third season like i was so empty after finishing this is was cuhrazy .

now about the romance... i feel like the best way to describe it is fanfiction-esque. and not like wattpad lemons, but ao3 slowburn. challe's cold demeanor slowly melting when he's around anne, wanting to protect her, smiling only ever to her in touching moments... ugh. they even HUG. jhgfjgdshdgfsjg!! !! !>!? yeah anyways it hit goood

and yet! i crave more. oh how i yearn for a slowdance or a handholding.. though i know its a lot to ask for,, my hope is held out for them in the future. the setup is there! the slowburn has its embers!

in conclusion...

★★★★✫ 4.5 lucky stars.

i know, i know, WHEN will she give out the elusive 5 lucky stars, if not now? tbh paw-bably never ^_^ i had to remove that poor .5 because of the double "age of majority" line. just make characters 18 if u wanna romance an old man, the story would not have lost anything by doing that.

still, this was the best shoujo ive seen in a long long time, especially out of the newer stuff. hit all the right points and did so in such a pretty sparkly sweet way. my teeth are rotten and my heart is warmed :3
