with my exposure to the internet and pre-existing love of anime, it was only natural for me to fall down the rabbit-hole of vocaloid in my middle school years. today, i have cultivated a 150+ song playlist on youtube of all my favourites, which you can find here. in this post, i will be highlighting some of my top tracks and songs that stand out to me. it'll probably end up pretty long, so be prepared to scroll a lot xP
the classics:
levan polkka, the dance i learned in grade 7 that has haunted me ever since. i made a deal with the devil that ensures i always bust out the goofy leek-bopping whenever this tune comes on. what's with the leeks, anyways? all the vocaloids have a certain food association- but why?
triple baka, a true classic. my first introduction to both neru and teto, which both confused me as they aren't really vocaloids at all. when i think of weeaboo nostalgia, this song is at the top of the list.

sekaiiiiiii de ichiban ohime sama, aka the only japanese song i could confidently say i know all the lyrics to. girlboss shit. a comment i just noticed on this video pointed out that the producer made miku breathe in this song, which is cool as fuck.
senbonzakura, the first of our googoo888 specials. i heard recently that this song might promote japanese nationalism? i guess its one of the gateways to becoming a true to the meaning "weeaboo" x__X

ok i just went on a journey looking for the history of this song so it has to be here. i had noticed a similar melody in teto territory and parts of cirno's perfect math class, so i wanted to know which came first. i traced cirno to oct 31, 2008, and teto to sometime in 2008, but i needed to know! my journey brought me to 3 different niconico videos (1, 2, 3), with the third (which i think is the original song) stating it was a parody of a different touhou fansong- it's always cirno's turn.

i love the perverted and dark vocaloid songs the best because while the rythym may be boppin, the lyrics can mean something totally different and you would never know without looking yourself :p

dark songs:
literally every kikuo songs fits in this category, and they're all really good, but this one is probably the most popular. peppy tune with harsh, cruel lyrics. i really recommend checking out kikuo's discography if dark songs are your thing.
my personal fav if i wanna spook myself. rinnie's got a real green thumb in this song! ^^ the "aaaaa" part with two of her is really unnerving to me, though, bbbbbb T__T
based on the horrifying story of albert fish, the reversed part of this song is his confession note which is a gruesome and descriptive telling of how he killed and ate a little girl, one of many in his evil life.
wowaka, too, fits right into the dark category, with his emotion-filled melodies and hopeless/desperate vocals. rest in peace to one of the best vocaloid producers out there.
muship has a similarly quirky sound to kikuo, but the lyrics are much more ambiguous. the video for this song is really visually appealing to me, and you can interpret the lyrics as you enjoy it.
i wish i had more space to appreciate these producer's pain, but i don't, so here is a list of some more that i feel deserve recognition. mix of sad and scary

i dubbed this one my favourite song in grade 8.
i remember it playing in my head when i was punching the bag at karate with my friend. this song and samgladiator's yandere high minecraft roleplay series... that was the good life =w=)
today, this is my favourite vocaloid song. the history behind it is crazy, too! it was made by einshine, my old favourite youtube, who has since vanished from the internet! the art was made by his friend kat/nyansai who has since returned to the web :0 ! you should check out her song little raindrop, its a fav too :3

i think calne ca is a super well-designed body horror character, and i loove seeing any type of fanwork of her. i saw a cosplay with full prosthetics once. so fuckin cool.
meiko and kaito sound so fucking good in this song. they're both pretty underrated voices, but tuned right they both have a very mature and sophisticated sound that i adore.
